Hidden Insurance Benefits You May Not Know About
Many health insurance plans cover far more than doctor visits. From occupational therapy and chiropractic care to massage therapy and gym memberships - here is how to find and use benefits you are already paying for.
Occupational Therapy (OT)
Occupational therapists help people regain independence in daily activities after illness, injury, or surgery. Most major insurance plans - including Medicare and Medicaid - cover OT when deemed medically necessary. Ask your provider for a referral and verify your annual visit allowance with your insurer.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic adjustments for musculoskeletal conditions are covered under many PPO and HMO plans, and Medicare Part B covers a limited number of visits per year. Always confirm your plan covers the specific diagnosis code before your first appointment to avoid surprise bills.
Massage Therapy
While often seen as a luxury, medically prescribed massage therapy for conditions like chronic pain, fibromyalgia, or post-surgical recovery can be covered when ordered by a physician. Some FSA and HSA accounts also allow you to pay for massage with pre-tax dollars.
Gym Memberships and Fitness Programs
Programs like SilverSneakers (for Medicare beneficiaries), One Pass, and employer wellness programs often provide free or discounted gym memberships. Some Medicare Advantage plans include fitness benefits as a standard feature - check your Summary of Benefits document.
